Drone Laws in the United Kingdom

Most people must register two IDs (except for toys) before flying most drones or model aircraft outdoors in the UK. The IDs you need depend on the weight or class of your drone or model aircraft.

General Rules for Flying a Drone in the United Kingdom


  • 250g< A Drone < 20kg, needs Flyer ID and Operator ID.


  • A Drone with a Camera < 250g, needs Operate ID.


  • A Drone >7kg, is subject to additional terms (Holy Stone Drones<1kg).


  • Stay below 120m ( 400 feet).


  • Always keep your drone in sight.


  • Stay well away from Aircraft, Airports, and Airfields.

Register and take the test to fly

Use this service to:

1. Take the theory test to get a flyer ID

2. Register for an operator ID if you also own or are responsible for a drone or model aircraft

Age limits

1. You must be at least 18 years old to get an operator ID.

2. You must be at least 13 years old to get a flyer ID by yourself.

You need to apply to CAA in advanced in following cases:

  • Less than 50m (150 feet) away from people and other people's property (such as houses, etc.)

  • Less than 150 meters (500 feet) away from crowds and urban areas

  • Flights involving commercial purposes and first-person primary perspective flight (FPV)
