Mastering the Art of Drone Maneuvers: Exploring Lateral Movements and Rotations

Now, let's dive further into the dynamics of drone flight by exploring the various modes of lateral movement that these aerial marvels are capable of. Understanding these maneuvers is essential for anyone looking to master the art of piloting a drone. From forward and backward motions to bending left and right, and even the graceful rotations of the quadcopter in mid-air, each of these actions is made possible through precise control of the drone's orientation and propulsion.


Forward and Backward】 

Forward and backward motions are the lateral movements of the drone.

Forward is controlled by increasing the speed of the two propellers on the rear side of the quadcopter or by decreasing the speed of the two propellers on the front side of the quadcopter.

Backward is the opposite operation. The different rotation speeds will create a lift difference, the quadcopter moves in the direction of the side where less lift is created.

The pitch (tilt) of a Drone 

A quadcopter's forward and backward motion is controlled by changing its pitch angle. A pitch (tilt) is a movement that a drone that rotates around its lateral axis.  

           


Bend left and bend right】 

As the quadcopter is X type frame, bending left and bending right are also lateral movements, their working principle is the same as the working principle of forward and backward, the quadcopter moves in the direction of the side where less lift is created.

Bend left needs to decrease the spinning speed of the left side propellers to make the lift on the left side smaller than the right side or to increase the right side propellers’ spinning speed to produced a larger lift on the right side, and then the quadcopter moves to the left.

Bend right needs to decrease the spinning speed of the right side propellers to make the lift on the right side smaller than the left side or increase the left side propellers’ spinning speed to produce a larger lift on the left side, and then the quadcopter moves to the right.

【The Roll of a Drone】 

But bend left and right motions are not controlled by changing the quadcopter’s pitch angle, it is controlled by changing the quadcopter’s roll angle. A roll is the movement of a drone that rotates around its longitudinal axis; for a quadcopter, the longitudinal axis is from the quadcopter's head to its tail.

           

Rotate Left and Rotate Right】 

Rotate left and right motions are the rotational movement of the drone.

Rotate left is controlled by increasing the speed of counterclockwise motors or decreasing the speed of clockwise motors. Rotate left 2 types 2.png


Rotate right is controlled by increasing the speed of clockwise motors or decreasing the speed of counterclockwise motors.

【The Rotate of a Drone】

Rotate left and right motion of the quadcopter is controlled by changing the yaw angle.

A yaw is the movement of a drone that rotates around its vertical axis. In order to turn left or right, the ESC will control the spinning speed of the drone's motors, making the speed of counterclockwise motors increase/decrease or making the speed of clockwise motors decrease/increase.
